Additional Volunteer RequirementsDear Volunteers:There have been changes made to the Seattle School District’s volunteer policies. As a result, there are some additional things that you must do before volunteering at Olympic Hills or any other Seattle Public School.You must complete the following forms each year that you wish to volunteer: Additionally, you must complete the following on-line course: If you do not have computer access, please let the office know and we will arrange for you to have access to a computer at school. For your convenience, I have included the necessary forms with this letter. I know that many of our volunteers completed some of these forms already this year. If you have, please just indicate which forms you have already completed.  While it may seem that this process is a lot of work, it is for the safety of your children and all of the children here at Olympic Hills. We appreciate all of the work you do and know that we could not provide everything that we do without your help. Sincerely, Helen Joung, PrincipalWant to Help Fund Olympic Hills?Families can help raise fund s for Olympic Hills when buying gasoline at CHEVRON. King Program Details Bus Transportation (English)September 2014

As approved by the school board in February, the following walk-to-school and busing boundaries apply for the 2014-15 school year:
Elementary students living more than 1 mile from their neighborhood school will receive yellow bus service to that school. Transportation resources:We certainly understand there are concerns for a number of families and our staff is working hard to help find solutions with the limited funds and flexibility we possess. In addition to securing more ORCA passes, we are taking requests for spots on buses on a space available basis.Please keep in mind, space is very limited at this time and places on the bus are offered on a first come, first served basis. To request a space, please call 206-252-0900 or email your request to transdept@seattleschools.org.As an additional measure, we are encouraging individual schools to work together with their parents, PTSAs, and communities to help identify solutions, such as carpools, walking school buses, and walking buddies.Again,we are working hard within the boundaries of our new policy to find solutions to each concern. *NOTE As of the beginning of this school year, only students within a school’s attendance area are eligible to receive bus service to that school, as long as they live outside the walk-to-school boundary. Espero que Ia siguiente información ayude a resolversus inquietudes.En febrero del2014, la mesa directiva aprobó cambios en el plan de transporteestudiantil del distrito. Como parte de estos cambios, transportaciónelimino en todo el distrito los “privilegios” para estudiantes que vivenfuera del área de asistencia escolar.A partir de esteaño escolar, solamente los estudiantes que vivan en el área deasistencia escolar son elegibles para recibir servicio transporteescolar, siempre y cuando vivan fuera de los límites de ir caminado a laescuela. Estas reducciones en el servicio de estudiantil financiado porel distrito, aunque penosas, permiten a la mesa directiva evitarrecortes de personal y otros servicios. Para ayudar a reducir el impactoen nuestras familias, hemos hecho todo lo posible para informar a laspersonas afectadas por estos cambios en los últimos siete meses yestamos tratando de encontrar la forma de satisfacer las necesidadesindividuales.

Gracias por supaciencia y comprensión, mientras trabajamos para dará a cada una de susinquietudes la atención que se merece.Respetuosamente.Bob Westgard Director de Logistica y TransportaciónEscuelas Públicas de SeattleCOUNTING MONEY AT HOME PAYS OFF!Counting money is an important life skill that supports other math skills and number sense. Here at Olympic Hills we encourage every family to help teach their child to count coins and bills. Below the necessary skills are broken down by grade level. Keeping some loose coins in a jar really pays off! 

KINDERGARTEN
: By spring most kindergartners are ready to fluently count DIMES &PENNIES. Parent shows how to move coins from one pile to another. Start with dimes and count aloud. Switch to pennies and count by ones aloud. Give your child a chance to practice with several different amounts (under $1) like: 24 cents, 36 cents, 42 cents, etc. 

FIRST & SECOND
: If your child is skilled at counting dimes and pennies, it is time to try nickels. First practice counting by fives, from different ten numbers like 20 or 30. Count aloud as you demonstrate this. 

THIRD
: 3rd graders who are fluent with nickels, dimes & pennies are ready for QUARTERS. Warm up with the progression 25, 50, 75, $1. This can betaken to $2 or $3 if the child is ready. Once the coins counting patterns are established, offer random amounts within $5 for your child to count. Teach counting off the quarters first, then the dimes, the nickels, and then the pennies. Introduce small bills when your child masters all coins. 

FOURTH 
graders are ready for almost any amount within $100 and beyond. They should be able to handle currency (bills) like fives and tens along with the ones. Include all the coins. They are counting amounts like: $23.67, $78.02. Fourth graders should also practice reading dollar and cent amounts. Pick up a calculator to practice adding and subtracting. Addition & subtraction should also be done on paper. Kids practice keeping their decimals points aligned and print neatly to avoid confusion. Accuracy is king! 

FIFTH
graders are doing largely what we covered in fourth, but with larger amounts.Work with hundreds and even thousand dollar amounts. Fill each place with different numbers. Read amounts where zero might hold places, like:$204.06.Work on fluency and accuracy. Teach your fifth grader more about managing money and keeping accurate records. Even with Smart Phones doing much of that these days, there’s a lot to be said about knowing old fashion record keeping. The brain is challenged and must stay organized. All these skills will help your child do better on standardized tests and other tasks they will face in upper school grades.
