Extracurricular Activities

Within the school day we also provide Instrumental Music with free instruments for 4th-5th graders, and Field Trips (3-5per year, cost $3-7 per trip).  Added programs need to be offered outside of the school day, so that the curricular goals can be met without our limited school day time.  After school programs must be free of charge.  They vary depending on grant funding, or volunteer interests.  Volunteers are always welcome to create an after-school program idea.  We are privileged to work with your child.

TAIKO DRUMMING!

RUMBLE...RUMBLE...BOOM! Mr. Brown offers an after-school Japanese style Taiko Drumming program to grades 4 & 5 throughout the year. He runs three seasonal sessions, each followed by alive performance at the school. Mr. Brown lived and worked in Japan inthe 1990s before coming to Seattle Schools and Olympic Hills as a classroom teacher.  With blues and rock drumming as a hobby, Mr. Brown added to his repertoire the culture of Japanese Taiko drumming. In 2001,he began building drums from wine barrels donated by Chateau StMichelle Winery.  Within a few years the five solid-oak drums at OlympicHills were completed.

Since 2001 Taiko Drumming has become part of our school’s music culture. Our children anticipate every school performance, as well as an autumn appearance at the Lake City Community Center for the school’s annual Pancake Breakfast.
